Discussion of the Insurrection for AFT Members

With impeachment underway, the foundations our democracy under attack, and the inauguration of Joe Biden only a few days away, we’re navigating a crisis the likes of which our country has never seen. We want to make sure our members understand what the next few days will look like and what we’ll be focusing on moving forward.

On Thursday at 6 p.m. EST, we will hold a special town hall for our members about the violent insurrection at the Capitol. We’ll discuss why our executive council unanimously voted to support the immediate removal of President Trump as the constitutional remedy for encouraging an attempted coup. We want to make sure AFT members have their questions answered about the process and have an opportunity to discuss our unique role in helping students process the violence at the Capitol. We’re still working on the full speaker lineup, but just today historian Anne Applebaum has agreed to join us. We will also be joined by a member who will discuss how to address the crisis in our classrooms.

In unity,
